That day's mission had the potential to be exciting, at least for adventurers looking to satisfy their greedy desires. The recipient were the Quadavs, a notoriously rich race since their whole centenary lives were dedicated to mining.
The contractor met the group at one of the mines entrances in the barren Gustaberg hills. It was an old Quadav.
- Ohh hello there young ladies. -
He talked very slow.
- I am Ba'Loh, I've been living here all my life. Allow me to tell you something about this precious place to us. -
And with that phlegmatic pace he started telling stories about the past of the mines.
He talked.
And talked.
And talked more.
The sun started setting.
- And so we come to this day. We prefer to hire mercenaries to clear the monsters so that the workforce doesn't have to ever stop and be distracted with other issues. -
He handed over a small map with the path to follow already marked on it.

Felli watched how the Al Bhed massaged her legs. Finally we're on the same page for once.
Eiko blinked at the two and broke her silence with a question. Do you know each other?
Ah right, I wanted to introduce you to each other after we got the details on the job. Who could know it would take that long. The thief scratched the back of her head. So here it goes, Eiko this is Rikku, an alchemist, she accompanied me since the very start of my adventure career. Rikku, this is Eiko, a summoner and a genius on fluting, who helped me on my last quest. After she finished the introduction with the supporting gestures, she clapped her hands. Please get along!
Eiko acted first, bowed to Rikku and gave the proper greeting for a refined lady. Nice to meet you, please take care of me.
The Al Bhed was taken by surprise by the formality and automatically replied in the same fashion. Nice to meet you too, Eiko. As if she remembered something Rikku's facial expression changed from surprise to a puzzled one. What is fluting?
An excited Viera jumped back into the conversation Just wait, you'll see it soon enough. It's amazing!
The Summoner's face blushed upon hearing it. I'm sorry, but today I will be using the Bo you got for me...
Oh well, maybe next time. Let's go and earn some money. Felli went ahead towards the mine closely followed by Eiko.
So what's fluting if I don't get to see it? Rikku called out to her group and they stopped.
See? Ah right, I wanted to show you this.. Dice Roll! After the Viera put her dices away she looked for the alchemist's reaction. Quite impressive, right? I learned it on my last quest!
Once more Rikku was caught by surprise, this time at the unknown feeling within her. What does it do?
Felli became impatient. What's with all your questions today? We already lost so much time, we're not getting payed by hours, get moving! And so the adventure could finally start!
The tunnels were well kept, dimly lit by torches on the walls and many Quadavs could be seen slowly moving around carrying mining tools and wheelbarrows. But Felli and her friends had to go deeper where the fastidious monsters had nested. Thankfully they had a map to move in that maze.
The sounds of the workers started fading in the distance as they progressed inside the mines, the air was a bit heavy.
They could spot the big head of a lizard(monster)in the distance, but it quickly ran further away from them disappearing in the darkness. At east they had an idea of what to expect.

Hey! Did you see that?! Rikku pointed at the darkness in front of them waving the arm quickly up and down.
What do you get excited about? It is just a regular Lizard and not some ancient fiend. Calm down. Felli narrowed her eyes trying to pierce the eternal night of the mine with her gaze, but failed to see anything which hinted at the presence of the monster anymore. Damn, I lost sight of it. She stood rooted on the spot while she continued to look for the vanished mob and suddenly felt something pulling her Power Vest from behind. The Viera quickly subdued her panic after finding out the reason. It was little Eiko who seemed to be infused with fear because the Al Bhed's vivid movements made her think the spotted enemy would be very powerful.
Rikku was unaware of what she caused I know that silly, but don't you think it's nostalgic? We encountered them during your first quest!
Felli's facial expression turned as dark as the mine. How could I forget them? She still remembered all the pain those Lizards inflicted on her just too well. Another memory resurfaced and forced her to ask Can you really manage not to get us lost with the help of the map?
Eiko noticed how the alchemist fumed all of a sudden. Don't try to change the topic!
The summoner's worries increased, not only because they might never find their way out with the new girl in possession of the map, but also the displayed familiarity between the Viera and Al Bhed created unrest within her.

The map was actually leading them in the same direction the lizard ran off to, but the tunnel kept getting darker and darker, they could barely see each other at a close distance.
Then finally a light appeared in front of them...and it kept getting closer and bigger and brighter...directed straight at Rikku's abdomen, it was actually a fireball shooting across the air!. -

Watch out! Felli shouted as she tried to push Rikku out of the fireball's path. The scream of the surprised Al Bhed didn't bother her at all. Her focus was completely on finding the enemy. It was too dark to spot anything in the distance, so Felli could only run towards the direction the flame came from. Rather than on her eyes, she relied on her instincts and that thieverish hand of hers. Since she knew the height of the fiend, from the previous sighting, and the fact that the attack could only fly in a straight line, the Thief judged the chance to successfully steal to be decent enough to actually attempt it. Maybe its own attack's light dazzled it and prevents it from moving..
Eiko followed her leader without hesitation. The summoner held the staff like a lance in hope to at least poke the fiend with it. Blindly flailing it around with no idea where the target seemed like a bad idea, even at her age.
Left behind was only the poor alchemist, sitting on the floor. Afte she noticed her teammates to be rushing onwards, Rikku got up and yelled Wait for me! and started to chase after them. Since it was too dark to use her gun, she resorted to her dagger. The Al Bhed didn't want to accidently shoot her friend in the back, no matter how often they quarreled. While Felli waved her dagger in the middle of nowhere the sneaky lizard came out trotting casually and passing her on the left side(visible now at close distance).
The monster observed the situation and judged that Eiko was definetely the easiest target as she was the smallest, and thus tried to charge her with its big head and take her down with a single well placed headbutt.
Further ahead the torches were lit again on the walls and more lizards could be seen hanging out in the room. That meant that they only had to be in the dark for that small part of the tunnel...hopefully.. -

Eiko could finally see the monster at close range and tried to set up her staff like a post between the Lizard and herself for it to run into. She stemmed herself against the Bo, holding the upper part with both hands while using the left foot as stopper for the lower end with the right leg serving as supporting leg.
After the impact the summoner would pull the upper part of the staff to herself so she could attempt to heave the lower end towards the foe's chin.
Felli noticed how the Lizard passed her but she was too slow in her reaction to stop it from doing so. She had to come to a complete halt before she could turn around to follow it.
While this increased the threat for Eiko, the delay in action had its merits for the Viera. With the enemy's back in front of her there seemed to be nothing which could stop her from stealing this time. Now I got you! Her hands skillfully moved towards the unaware Lizard in order to look for valuables.
The Al Bhed arrived at the scene as last person. Her goal was to prevent the monster from running away again. For this Rikku prepared her attack by getting into a position from where she could damage the right leg of the Lizard with her dagger. Eiko was pushed back butt on the floor by the lizard's head attack, however she was still able to counter. And right after that Rikku's attack connected as well...although both of these strikes ended up resulting pretty poor between the enemy's tough skin, Eiko's weak constitution and Rikku's still lack of experience with that kind of weapon.
And so the monster felt pretty confident in its ability to get out of that battle as a winner despite being outnumbered. The lizard turned to Rikku and tried to bite off the wrist she exposed for her slash, while waving its small tail thinking it was enough to keep Felli away on the other side.. -

Rikku tried to escape the mouth of the Lizard by continuing the right hand's movement beyond that of a normal horizontal slash from left to right. In order to not let the hand stop in midair and thus becoming an easy target for the monster, she attempted to spin her whole body around. The Al Bhed hoped that even if the shoulder did not pull back the hand in time, it would at least break it free again. In that case she would complete the spin and try to perform another horizontal slash from left to right across the foe's scaly face.
Eiko removed her butt from the cold floor and took a proper battle stance. For the first time she faced an enemy that was not of gigantic size. Paired with her new longer weapon she tried out a totally new attack for her.
Both hands wrapped around one end of the staff she raised the weapon above her head and let the other end rain down towards the Lizard's head. Just like she saw it Naja doing during the last quest.
Felli was focused. If one saw her expression within this darkness, in this very moment, one would think that she faces a life-threatening situation and not just a small tail. For her however this felt like such a situation and thus she was dead serious. The circumstances cornered her, and she was left with just one option she could do.
Her eyes followed the tail without blinking once, until that very moment, the Viera judged to be the right one, came and she started to move.
The dagger darted forwards trying to cut the tail off with an uppercut motion.

Rikku wounded the lizard's mouth and the monster was then hit by the other two attacks as well(the latter one also caused it to lose its small tail). The monster suddenly became worried and so it tried to run away towards its friends by passing Felli on her right side, moving its short legs with some difficulty due to the lack of a tail that caused it to lean the heavy head forward, almost on the ground.. -

As soon as Eiko noticed that the Lizard tried to escape, the smile, she had on her face after the summoner successfully copied Naja's attack, deteriorated.
It wasn't because of her being disgusted with the monster's behaviour.
That was to be expected after it took such a beating.
Nor was the reason that Felli's attack had more impact on the foe.
She didn't mind it if it was her.
Neither was it the thought of how tough a fight with three of these creatures at once would be.
As Eiko could still prevent it from happening.
Although she wasn't sure if her plan can work the way she imagined it. Of course she practiced her new ability before going on this quest, but she never tested how far away from her it could still be pulled off.
But this doubt wasn't the reason either, at least not fully. She had some confidence after all or she wouldn't have even tried it. The Lizard was just next to Felli, meaning only a couple of steps away from herself.
The reason was stress.
The stress was huge enough to deal pain to Eiko. The small body trembled. Her new ability consumed a big chunk of her magical capabilities. It still challenged her mental condition even after the practice she underwent beforehand.
Maduin she whispered. The Summoner needed to say that word, as it made it easier to focus her mind on that magic in order to complete it.
Mana left her body and formed an existence in the path of the Lizard's escape route.
The appearance made one think of it as a white Lion standing on two feet with purple wings on its back. The arms were extremly brawny and ended in big paws.
Stop the Lizard. Eiko was neither whispering nor screaming as it wasn't directed at the summon directly.
She was connected to Maduin via a constant Manastream, but had problems conveying orders purely through that connection. The words only helped her to focus of what she wanted to transmit.
Although not intended the words let the surprised Rikku and Felli know what was going on.
Maduin moved according to the orders. It formed a fist with the right paw and tried to hammer it upon the Lizard's head as if to punch it into the ground like a nail.
Rikku and Felli were paralyzed between the appearance of Maduin and Eiko's words.
Both had never seen it before and it was only natural to be frozen upon first sight. Especially the Viera broke out in cold sweat as she was turning around when that white Lion shaped itself.
Not to mention that it was fairly close to her.
Felli had seen a few summons in her life already from the Summoners passing through her village. Those had always been smaller ones like Carbuncle though, in order not to scare the children.
Only hearing Eiko's words released her from the shock as she began to grasp the new sudden change of the situation.
Stop the Lizard Eiko's word echoed through Felli's mind and helped her body to move for that goal. She noticed the tipsy movements and the low head. The thief tried to abuse the situation got behind the monster and attempted to skewer its rear from below to push it up and make the head touch the floor with this indirect method.
Rikku couldn't attack. At first she was displeased with the low impact of her previous attack, then she fell into the shock because of Maduin. The Al Bhed couldn't shake off the surprise as well as her friend. The sudden appearance of Maduin scared the lizard that stopped in its tracks trying to turn around. The punch however erased that option as well for the wounded monster that fell down overpowered and dazed. Then along came Felli who finished the job with her good dagger-work.
The threat was gone, but not for long as just ahead of them more monsters were waiting...well, kind of. They didn't know what was coming yet!. -

After the death of the Lizard, the group had time to take a deep breath. Felli and Rikku used that short break to inspect the newest addition to their team.
Amazing! The Al Bhed said with her eyes and mouth wide open.
Maduin positioned himelf behind Eiko, who had a beaming smile filled with proud as she stood with her hands on her hips.
Of course it is, I put a lot of effort into it after all. In a smaller voice she added Wait and see how I become the number one for Felli in no time oh-oh-oh! Eiko hid her laugh behind the back of her hand. Both Rikku and Felli were unable to took note of it.

Tehehe. The summoner blushed and changed into a shy pose, holding her own hands behind her back while slowly moving her hips to the sides.
I already have an idea on how to use it... with a mischievous smirk Felli informed the others of her plan.
Rikku aimed calmly, hidden in the shadows, at the Lizard#2 which was standing in the pool of light of a nearby torch. The target was the Lizard's side visible to her and prepared her special skill Reckless Abandon. She pulled the trigger of her gun which also signaled the start of the plan and thus the battle.
Felli and Eiko ran up to Lizard#2. The plan was the Viera passing it to the left and the Summoner to the right. As Rikku's special shot usually slowed down the enemy, they deemed it to be possible. Each of them planned to attack the respective Leg. Eiko used her staff like a bat this time and attempted to bash the monster's shin with it.
Felli on the other side tried to cut deep into the thigh with her gil-generating ability Mug with a stab.
Maduin was assigned to Lizard#3. One of the reasons was to keep it busy but also to give Felli and Eiko some space to manoeuvre around the other Lizard. The lizard was shot in its left side and suddenly the world around it felt faster. The monster couldn't do much to defend itself against the additional attacks and surrounded by enemies it looked confused not knowing what to do about it. In the end it just shot from its mouth a fireball forward trying to set Rikku on fire.
The other lizard wanted to help her friend, but there was the problem of a giant lion-like thing blocking the way. And hitting it hard on the muzzle. The lizard dazed stumbled for a moment but then tried to counterattack charging Maduin running forward and trying to break his hips with a hard headbutt..
